According to the Diablo vs. Fremantle SDK content comparison:

Fremantle SDK version of SDL is same as Diablo one i.e. it hasn't
been updated for Fremantle & OpenGL.

I really don't know, but I guess so...

There was last year an announcement of somebody porting Vincent3D
(OpenGL ES 1.1 software implementation) to N800 (google for
"opengl-es-for-maemo").  Maybe that could help?
