Well, that went quickly.

According to the version info, the gpsd included with Maemo is fairly
old, I'd consider it entirely likely that it's a carry-over of a broken
gpsd release version.

Various gpsd releases have had various issues with different NMEA
steams.

FWIW this shows up on the Maemo gps inerface when using a BT GPS too, it
gets a "lock" under show location but can't tell the altitude or speed.
