Ah! Thanks for that Jiri. Unfortunately the webserver I've got my packages on is one that doesn't understand .htaccess files. Looks like it's going to have to be a "no install file" job. But on the plus side, anybody who's likely to install Apache (oh the irony of hosting Apache packages on a different type of webserver) should be fairly technically competent anyway. Strange that the install file for the OS2007 version works without the extra data though...
