[maemo-developers] How to run an app (simply)

Is there a simple way of downloading and running an
application on Maemo2008? I tried copying a file and
simply double-clicking it, but no go. I then tried
using Xterm and using chmod to set excecution
permission, but it wouldn't let me.

I was hoping there was a simpler method than having to
an instal package.
