I'm not sure what you mean by more independent. Moblin targets Ubuntu
Mobile among other clients/users, and Maemo targets Nokia's personal
internet tablets, among others.

As I said, if you stick to the common GNOME Mobile APIs, you should be
able to manage both moblin & Maemo pretty easily.
