BTW, I tested putting packages in user/hidden category and indeed
(albeit autobuilder complaining about the unknown category)
application manager recognizes new versions of packages in that
category (showing the update notification and allowing to upgrade).

Not sure if it is the best/correct solution though, as it looks like
undocumented.
