Yep, I'm familiar with that (and have been doing it since the day I got my N800), but my current phone only supports GPRS, which feels slow enough (bordering on "unusable" much of the time) even on non-bandwidth- intensive applications that I can't imagine Skype would work over it. (Skype has recently become both my primary and secondary phone numbers due to an international move.)
