It's independant on anything. I didn't knew Conduit nor OpenSync, but
considered Kolab before rejecting it because of being too complex.
I needed something dead simple so that I could easily add anything
that pops up in my mind : list manager, project management, instant messaging,
video conferencing, geolocalization sharing, or anything new one need.

To achieve this, I had to throw out of the client compatibility with
external protocols - while Telepathy, for instance, is more an abstract
layer above them. When compatibility to other protocols is required,
it's implemented on a central server as a gateway. Needing a central
server is really the price to pay here, but it also much simpler than
multi-host peer to peer synchronisation, and offer some possibilities
(like, say, archiving voice calls for free).

I know that one should try to reuse existing software before starting
adding his own pile of stuff to the enormous stock of bad code that
already exist out there. I just couldn't resist :-)
