This was added in GTK+ 2.16:
http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkEntry.html#GtkEntry--im-module
But Maemo Fremantle has GTK+ 2.12.

So, no, I don't think there is any easy way to do this in Maemo. I
personally pushed for that feature in GTK+ because of this.
