Standalone application you could test in the SDK.

The browser is not installable in the SDK. The icon is just a place-holder, so that it does not break the UI.

As Antonio said, you can use aptitude for that in the terminal. The application manager is just a front-end for it.

Generally spoken: you can test your standalone applications with the SDK and the rest directly on the device.
