I think there are two kinds of trust on the table here: trust in
developers not to make mistakes, and trust in developers not to abuse
the process malevolently.

We don't need to trust developers not to make mistakes.  A developer
doesn't even trust himself/herself not to make mistakes, of course.

But I think wa want to trust developers not to be malevolent.  There
will be exceptions, they will be found out and punished, the malecreants
will create another account, and life goes on.
