We all can convert them slowly. I'm not sure it only is "thick" apps which are the issue. Symlinks (as created by maemo-optify) aren't free; and a large app with lots of them will still take up space in /. Neither HAM nor apt handle a full / very well, so if not a requirement, I'd probably argue for /opt/_package_ being a recommendation for any Maemo user-facing application. Limiting it to a hack for a "large" app results in a question of when is an app "large": 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, ...?
