After having now configured the correct sources.list (thanks Juha!),
after some time

 > fakeroot ./make_rootfs.sh

stops now with

-- cut --
...
Selecting previously deselected package mini-rc.
Unpacking mini-rc (from .../mini-rc_0.2.40_all.deb) ...
Setting up base-passwd (3.5.11.osso4) ...
mmap: Permission denied

update-passwd has found some differences between your system accounts
and the current Debian defaults. It is advisable to allow update-passwd
to change your system; without those changes some packages might not work
correctly. For more documentation on the Debian account policies please
see /usr/share/doc/base-passwd/README.

The list of proposed changes is:

It is highly recommended that you allow update-passwd to make these
changes
(a backup file of modified files is made with the extension .org so
you can
always restore the current settings).

Okay, I am going to make the necessary updates now
mmap: Permission denied
dpkg: error processing base-passwd (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 255
Errors were encountered while processing:
  base-passwd
E: Sub-process /scratchbox/devkits/debian-etch/bin/dpkg returned an
error code (1)
[FATAL] Unable to install packages from packages
[sbox-maemo-beagle: ~/rootfs] >
-- cut --

I'm not sure this is a Maemo or host system issue? I'm doing this on
openSUSE 11.1.

Again any hint?

Many thanks and best regards

Dirk
