I have a similar search entry in the toolbar in gpe-contacts.  And, although I 
am not in a position to test it at the moment, I think it does work in 
scratchbox.

However, I am not using the "activate" signal, I am using the "value-changed" 
signal.  Of course, this gives a sort of "incremental search" feel and it 
means the search is repeated for every letter the user types, which may not 
be what you want.  But maybe it would work for your debugging, at least.
