It isn't a great solution, I agree, but it is a matter of scale and timing.  
The way I had intended was, I think, rather different from libegg in that I 
had imagined that probably only one or two projects would use the standalone 
code before the decision was made to incorporate it into Hildon or into 
another (community) library.  But, you re right, that it could very rapidly 
degenerate if the guesses for scale and timing are wrong!

So, I agree that a real community library is a better solution, although it 
has its own problems with maintenance (particularly for widgets which do get 
adopted by Hildon but with some changes).  But at least they can be solved in 
one place.
