I admit I've only tried it in the other direction myself - displaying my
desktop apps on the N900's display, which works fine (and is the only
direction that actually needs the N900 to run a full X server, you could
probably have forwarded in the direction you're asking about just fine
without running any X server on the N900, just having the X client
libraries (though, of course, if the device wasn't X-based, the client
libraries probably wouldn't be there and in use either)).

To display the N900's display elsewhere I think most people would just
use x11vnc. However, you can probably make ssh work if you steal the
xauth package off Debian's armel repository for etch or something.
