Is it optional, or are you suggesting a change to Modest's default
user interface?

It looks good, but I'm not sure the expand/contract buttons are used
in other tree views, are they? For example, the move messages dialogue
has "Gmail" be expandible in my Modest, but doesn't appear to have the
square +/-.
