What's the file type in Opera's download dialog? In my case it says:
video/x-msvideo
I haven't configured anything, but maybe Ubuntu Dapper dit it for me.

file command on the host gives this:
hugo.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 352 x 208, ~15 fps, video:
DivX 4, audio: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)
