I think you are referring to bug 1010[1] which, interestingly, has been closed (which may explain why you couldn't find it) with status "RESOLVED" and resolution "LATER".

My guess is that this bug will be fixed in the "Modest"[2] email client. Until then you may want to consider Claws Mail[3]
