Try turning off text prediction and word completion.  It speeds it up
remarkably.  It does seem kinda random when it's turned on though.

The bar with Abc is the text prediction.  It will go away if you do the
above.  Staggering waste of space, isn't it?

Don't just stew, vote for the bug here:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2850 Let Nokia know this is happening
to more people and you're not pleased.  I can't believe we have only 5 votes
for this killer bug.

There is a possible workaround too - turn on your bluetooth icon in the
taskbar.  Leave it on... It may not be a 100% cure but it seems to help a
lot for most people.
