This isn't strictly true. I have the maximum (128Mb) swap partition
enabled on my internal card (8Gb Class 6), and don't have any problem
accessing that card from my desktop machine over USB. I suppose it's
possible that it only works because the swap partition isn't actually
being *used* when I'm connecting via USB because I'm usually starting
from a fresh boot and haven't opened any apps.

I *can't* access it if I forget and leave some app open that is
accessing files on that card, but that applies to both cards equally.
