Hm.  Sounds like a network layer problem to me, because I often get a similar
experience when I sign-in to Pidgin, or when I'm signing off of Pidgin.  I'm
guessing Pidgin or RTCOMM are handing completely (modal communication event?)
when they're doing a huge status check against the chat servers, and aren't
responding to the GUI/system-management-process during that time.

Seems like the GUI should be talking to an application thread that doesn't
hang, when determining if the application is responding or not.
