Forwarding comments from the internal ticket:

"But now we've tried to reproduce with GTalk on N800 and we couldn't, so
presumably something got improved."

"Verified also with a SIP call on N800. No voice dropouts were reported on the
other end which was PSTN. I'm not sure if the choice of the DSP codec could
change silence detection. An echo of the remote party was heard by herself,
suggesting a problem with echo cancellation, but that's a different issue."

The internal ticket has been closed as WORKSFORME.
