The echo test is precisely the problem: a steady sound from the microphone
triggers echo cancellation on the same sound, albeit with a roundtrip latency,
mixed in from the VoIP stream.

Try using the speakerphone when the recipient is another device, which is ether
in another location, or using headphones for audio output. If you still have
noticeable dropouts, then we should be concerned for real.
