In addition to an auto-away timeout, it would also be nice to be able to set
the status to 'away' permanently.

Strangely, you can actually set a Skype account to 'away' if you create a
custom status (as well as to 'do not disturb', 'invisible', etc). This is
however not possible for other account types. Google Talk for example supports
only 'available', 'busy' or 'offline', but for some reason is missing the
'away' status.
