How do you mean by the video? You mean the N900's screen?

Off is then an expected behavior. You would need to unlock the device first in
order to read the notification/message.

If any incoming SMS triggers an unlock on the device's screen while in your
pocket, you could accidentally trigger some other unwanted events.
