I don't know if this is considered an useless example, but I just tried
(successfully) to send the special command to swap the master and slave "BIS" 
SIMs (the italian vodafone's twin sim service).

This is normally done via a SAT menu (missing on the n900)

or

via the *101*1# command (refused by the n900 because the '#' character).

So I simply issued the command "atd *101*1# " to the modem's serial port and
the command worked perfectly.

So I'm still convinced that the main problem is just a stupid bug in the UI
that refuses the # symbol.

Fixing this can solve a lot of troubles to the n900 users, although it surely
not fix all the special commands related problems.
