Summary: Please allow non-digits in phone numbers
Product: Contacts
Version: 5.0/(1.2009.42-11)
Platform: All
OS/Version: Maemo
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: Unspecified
Component: General
AssignedTo: nobody at maemo.org
ReportedBy: lionel at mamane.lu
QAContact: contacts-bugs at maemo.bugs
SOFTWARE VERSION:
1.2009.42-11
Please allow non-digits (spaces, letters, parentheses, ...) in phone numbers in
contacts, and filter those out when sending a number to phone application (or
have the phone application filter them out).
Use cases:
- I usually have _one_ entry for a family living in one home. But each family
member (husband, wife, each of their children) has his own mobile and/or direct
extension. I then usually enter the numbers with an annotation like "(Fred)",
"(Anna)", "(Heather)", etc.
- For a business contact, two mobile numbers (or direct extensions) to enter:
the one for the contact hirself and the one for hir personal assistant /
secretary. Again, I usually disambiguate with an annotation in the phone
number.
This all worked very well on our aging PalmOS devices (Treo 600), the non-digit
characters and non-leading "+" were silently ignored in the dialed string.
EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. Try to enter letters in a phone number
OR
1. Import a VCard with letters in a phone number
2. Try to dial that number
respectively
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
Character inserted
OR
Dialing works, non-digits are filtered out of the dialed number.
respectively
ACTUAL OUTCOME:
characted silently not inserted
OR
"invalid number" error message, no call placed
respectively
REPRODUCIBILITY:
always
