I tried to follow this exactly, but I couldn't reproduce:

After step 4 the deleted account's contacts are no longer shown in the contacts
app, so I couldn't do step 5.

After step 6 (but before going online) the account's contacts magically
reappear.

After step 7 (online and connected to the server) the contacts are still there
(no duplicates either).

If I reverse the order of steps 5 & 6 the contacts are gone, but that's to be
expected (it just did what I asked it).

This is with ejabberd 2.05 btw.
