It seems to me that reading contents from the SIM card after entering the PIN
code might take a bit too long time.

Which operator SIM you have? It would be ++good if you could provide contents
of /var/log/syslog (install sysklogd from Fremantle SDK, boot the device as you
describe and try to make a call). (And don't forget to remove the syklogd
package afterwards.)
