I left a n900 on until the battery ran out and couldn't reproduce. I don't see
how running out of power can be different than removing a battery for instance.
Moreover, before the battery is completely empty the device should do a proper
shutdown.

What happens if instead of leaving the device running until the battery is
empty you turn if off and on again? Are the contacts split?
