If one works from terminal and deletes stuff then pin check would be pointless
yes.
If one deletes single instance of anything (file, contact info, ...) checking
that with PIN code would be pointless.

If one from UserInterface deletes ALL instances of some information repository
that contains data which owner of the device has somehow 'created' I would
really hope to see PIN check there just to validate that all must go and it is
not an accident and/or spiteful action.


About the "clear/reset the call-history or log of received messages". 

I have not gotten that far in investigating the device yet as to comment if it
would be good to have on those, but I think "complete contact information
removal" is important enough to be validated.

And no auto-locking is not the protection in this case. 
Unless you implement 'auto lock when ever leaving owners hands' feature.
