The internal bug got resolved with the following comment:
"A2DP is intended for unidirectional high-quality audio distribution. A voice
call requires full-duplex audio and has also a much lower latency requirement
than can be achieved with A2DP. Therefore, all multi-profile headsets switch
from A2DP to the Handsfree Profile (HFP) for the duration of a call. (the audio
could still come from both speakers even though it's mono and the fact that it
only comes from the other speaker is probably just a design feature of the
S9)."

And the "probably" part was confirmed as a "feature" of this handset model.
