Summary: SMS character set cannot be limited to ASCII like in S60
                    phones
Product: Chat & Call & SMS
           Version: 5.0/(1.2009.42-11)
          Platform: N900
        OS/Version: Maemo
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: Medium
         Component: Messaging
        AssignedTo: rtcomm at maemo.org
        ReportedBy: ikerrg at terra.es
         QAContact: im-chat-bugs at maemo.bugs

SOFTWARE VERSION:
1.2009.42-11

EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. Open Menu -> Conversations
2. Tap 'New SMS'
3. In 'To' field, type in your number
4. Enter some text in the body using accentuated characters (i.e. á é í ó
ú) or special characters (like ü). Many european languages use them but they
are not strictly necessary to understand a SMS.
5. The character counter rapidly increases requiring 2 or 3 SMS for a simple
short text.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:
The character set should be customizable (ASCII, Unicode) to avoid sending
unwanted long SMS when using special characters, like in S60 devices.

ACTUAL OUTCOME:
The character set used by the N900 depends on the characters used in the SMS
and it is not restricted to ASCII if desired, so long unwanted SMS can be
easily sent.

REPRODUCIBILITY:
always
