You should be able to use my instructions, at 
http://cleardefinition.com/page/Sync_Evolution_and_GPE_on_N800/ and just 
replace the evolution backend with the SyncML one.  I know such a swap 
has worked well with KDEPIM, and due to the design of OpenSync I see no 
reason why it wouldn't work with a different backend.
