The point is not that the normal user will never use syslog; all but about 4
physical pages should be able to be swapped out anyway.  The point is that maemo
is still a rather unforgiving development environment where too much magic
happens under the hood.  Writing new applications just for maemo isn't bad. 
Porting existing applications to interface with other things on the maemo is
very frustrating.  Too many interdependancies - very non unix.

I do display a progress bar during the initialization process.  For example the
.desktop file runs a script that dispatches two processes serially.  The first
process goes out to the net and looks for any updates then installs it.  The
second process is the real app. I don't want a process to try to update itself
because it's too dependant on the OSes file system and buffer cache layers if a
running file can be overwritten at all and if it can, what happens to the mapped
pages.
