Summary: Enhance usability/functionality of HildonTimeEditor and
                    HildonTimePicker
           Product: System software
           Version: 4.0
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: Medium
         Component: hildon-libs
        AssignedTo: michael.kostrzewa at nokia.com
        ReportedBy: erik--maemo at nygren.org
         QAContact: hildon-libs-bugs at maemo.org

I find the usability of HildonTimeEditor/HildonTimePicker to be considerably
worse than other widgets. This is one area where PalmOS has much a much
better UI than Hildon. In particular:

* The current widgets are not finger-friendly. For example, try setting
the wake-up time for an alarm without using the stylus or your fingernail.
At a minimum, the arrow buttons should be finger-sized.

* Quickly setting a time should be easier to do using a finger without
using a modal dialog box or clicking up and down.
For example, pressing on the time could open up a drop down
list with hours (or with every hour/half-hour in the day).
Even within the modal box, a drop-down selection list may be a fast
option to pick an hour or common minutes selections (eg, every 5 or 15.)

* There should be a variant of HildonTimeEditor that allows the selection
of both a start time *and* a duration/stop-time as a single action.
Moving the start-time should leave the duration the same (and adjust
the stop-time as needed). If the HildonTimePicker modal box is opened,
it should allow the selection of both of these simultaneously.
(There may want to be a special "all-day" selection option available
  here as well.)

It is worth optimizing for these common use-cases being
easy to do with a minimal number of finger/stylus clicks:

* Setting an alarm for a particular time.
(Two common cases are a 5-min aligned time like "7:55" or "10:30"
or for something like "25 minutes from now".)

* Entering a calendar entry (eg, in GPE-Calendar) using as few
clicks as possible. Ideally, common entries like 2-3pm shouldn't
require opening up a modal dialog box. If a modal box is opened,
it should allow the fast selection of times and durations
  within the same box.

The ease-of-use gap here between GPE-Calendar and the Palm DateBk3
is quite pronounced and is one of the things keeping me on the Palm
platform for calendaring.
