[maemo-community] Minutes from web design meeting 21/1/09

From: Dave Neary dneary at maemo.org
Date: Wed Jan 21 22:27:07 EET 2009
Hi all,

We had the regular weekly web design meeting today to evaluate progress
and identify any issues.

Present:
timsamoff
GeneralAntilles
Jaffa (:11)
X-Fade
bergie__ (left at :38)
Reggie
etrunko
glaubertoliveira (:43 - issues connecting to the channel before then)

Status on old actions:

Glaubert delivered new designs last week. There was some feedback on the
"basic content" page which he took into account, and produced a second
revision. He also provided designs for planet and downloads.

Henri received the new designs, and Neithan, Niels and he have been
working on a new CSS+HTML this week. Biels has been working on a fluid
version of the site, rather than fixed width:

Dave collected all of the graphics (logos, icons) for maemo.org into one
place http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Improving_maemo.org/Graphics for
Glaubert to work on redesigning them as needed.

Tim made some suggestions for the Support page
http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Improving_maemo.org/Support

Discussion:

Dave suggested wider margins for the fluid version of the page. Several
people disagreed with him. Everyone agreed that the page should be fluid
if feasible.

Reggie has started working on a vBulletin theme for itT which will
integrate well with maemo.org

Niels reminded everyone that the new theme will be visible as it's
developed on newstyle.maemo.org which will be maemo.org with the
maemo2009 style from maemo2midgard applied. For those who want to follow
the development of the new theme closely, subscribe to
maemo2midgard-commits.

Niels suggested that some pages needed some more design work. Dave asked
him to make a list of suggestions and mail the community list with it.

Reggie suggested naming classes "maemo_*" to allow easier integration of
generic widgets and templates into other sites. Henri said it would be a
bit of a dirty hack, but doable.

Jaffa suggested that retheming maemo.org/community/maemo-*/ was
important, but they were lower priority than itT which provides
essentially the same functionality. A confused discussion between Dave,
Niels and Jaffa ensued for a while.

Tim suggested to Glaubert that the Downloads page could look slightly
more like the home page, with the two big boxes at the top. He pointed
to his comments on the mailing list. Glaubert said he was going to start
working on the icons, and arrange them by priority.

Reggie, X-Fade and timsamoff pointed out that itT has a lot of icons,
such as smileys, too, which should be added to the list of things needed.

Dave suggested some of the old graphics didn't need changing, concensus
seemed to be that it was appropriate to revisit all old icons with the
new theme.

To finish up the meeting, Niels reminded people about watching pages in
the wiki, and GeneralAntilles also pointed out that if you check the
"Enhanced recent changes (JavaScript)" in Recent Changes, it becomes
much easier to follow regularly. Niels also pointed to
http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Implement_new_maemo.org_layout_and_style
where he is tracking progress of the migration.

Next steps:

Still need to list, and get designed, reusable templates. For example:
"Person widget": photo, name, karma, online status - two versions:
inline and small box
"Application widget": name, screenshot, downloads, stars, ...

Dave: Add required templates for people and applications to the Graphics
page

Henri, Lauris, Niels: continue working on migration to midgard, new site
to be updated live at newstyle.maemo.org

Glaubert: Work on providing new versions of icons on
http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Improving_maemo.org/Graphics and designs for
the templates for people & applications

Reggie: Start working on vBulletin theme

Niels: Propose list of pages which need new(er) designs from maemo.org

Dave & Tim: Finalise content proposal for Support

Dave: Track progress of everyone

Next meeting: Tuesday, 27th January, 14h UTC - 15h30 UTC, on
#maemo-meeting, on Freenode.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the meeting! It seems like we made
good progress this week.

Cheers,
Dave.
