Maybe it's time to use Python?

Python2.4 will be provided with maemo, it already have gtk2 and pygame
support, hildon is coming. Scripts launch fast and takes less memory.
   Maybe for number crunch apps, java would outpass, but small
productivity apps would benefit from python.

Give it a chance ;-)
