Hmm, it seems that I accidentally sent the last e-mail off-list, so sending the reply back through it. Unfortunately I do not have sufficient capability as far as coding goes; about the best I can do I think is raise awareness and be a cheerleader for Asian text support, an area most open-source developers seem to neglect. And input/testing perhaps, for anyone willing to work on some actual code. I understand C to a point, just was never able to get very good at it. :-( If you already have a working HWR engine, what is the purpose in writing an open-source version? To eventually replace the current solution?
