I recently needed to rebuild maemo_af_desktop (version 1.72 used with
maemo 1.1).  Invoking the configure script without any arguments will
result in a "functional" binary.  Unfortunately, this "functional"  
binary is not usable, as there are no menu entries.  I foolishly copied
this binary to my 770 without having a way to reverse the effects, and as
a result, I needed to reflash the firmware.

There is no INSTALL or BUILDING or related file in the directory (this
would be helpful!), but I eventually discovered that the following
command-line will result in a working binary:  ./configure --prefix=/usr
--sysconfdir=/etc .

Hopefully this information may be useful to someone else.
