The last discussion on this topic with some news was [1]. In that thread
at least two partly working solutions have been mentioned. These are
Java phoneME advanced and the JamVM + GNU Classpath + jikes.

I did... you can find tarballs [2] ready to use on the 770 and a wiki
page how the build was done [3].

I already got some feedback that the VM in phoneME performs nicely on
the 770.

You can read about the remaining problems that prevent the GTK based AWT
implementation in phoneME advanced's personal profile from working in
[4].
