There was a bug in some version of python2.5-gnome about it. But it was
fixed in some later version.
I have 2.18.0-1osso3, and it works

I don't know about it, but in python2.5-gtk2 2.12.1-1osso2 it works.

If there is some previous version with some bug as these, and the user
has this previous version installed, it can happen. 

You could put as dependence in the .deb package the version you are
using* or later, so if the user has a previous version with some bug,
it will be updated.

* and it works for you (I think the developers should always have the
last one).

For example, in debian/control, you should add a line with:
Depends: python2.5-gtk2 (>= 2.12.1-1osso2), .....
