Anybody can reliably find the sources, for debugging, for making changes to it, etc. It might not always be easy to find the right tag in the right source code repository. A community only really starts to shine when people fix each others bugs. Things like running a campaign to clean up the categorization mess are greatly simplified by having a central repository with sources.
