Yes, there should be no need to fork the Application manager just to support the community edition. Look at the nokia-repository package. Uninstalling it should remove the Nokia specific configuration bits from your device (catalogues, domains, and keys). You can make your own package like it with the community catalogues, etc. The nokia-repository package sources are not public, but it's trivial to 'reverse engineer' and everything you need to know should be documented anyway with the hildon-application-manager sources. If the current AM needs to be patched to support the community edition, or a smooth switch away from the Nokia edition, I'll be happy to accept those. (The reason why the AM didn't offer your version of osso-software-version was probably the 'package domain' system of the AM: the repository of your package wasn't signed with the right key, so the osso-software-version package in it got ignored. There is a red-pill mode setting to switch this off, of course.)
