Yes, you can, and there are already some commercial apps installed on
N900 by default, for example Documents To Go.

It is expected that Ovi market platform will be ready for Maemo
devices soon, so you can develop commercial apps for Maemo platform,
and you'll have a channel to monetize them easily.
