I instantiated the ClutterEmbed right at the beginning of the main(), just after 
gtk_clutter_init(). I cannot see what I could be doing wrong there.

Googling a bit, it seems that I'm not the only one having problems with 
clutter-gtk 0.8:

Anyway, any plans to integrate clutter 1.0?
