I agree. Maybe I'm wrong but I think Hildon updates are possible in Fremantle. As long as the new widgets make sense, the patches are good and they are well tested by the community and don't introduce risks or regressions... Why not? The Fremantle program runs their tests on the software pre-installed. If new widgets are introduced but they are not used by the official apps the probkem is perhaps not that big. Again, if good design, programming and testing back those new widgets.

This is no different than any mature piece of software being deployed in commercial devices. You can try out these widgets in an unstable branch, Nokia can keep the stable branch for Maemo. If patches in unstable are proven to work then libhildon can have this minor update.

In the meantime you can work on more radical changes if you wish, that will belong to a future major update perhaps. At some point Harmattan will be under our feet, Hildon will be out of Nokia's domain and whoever in the community works in the Harmattan version will be able to decide what comes in and what stays out.
