In our generic approach to chat, you may never know if the people are really
offline; e.g. we do not have a presence implementation for SIP yet (and most
services out there do not either), but you might want to send your SIP contact
a message. Then again, it makes total sense to post offline messages on some
services, even if it looks like "chatting with offline contacts" in our UI.

I'd say we should better our contact sorting. Currently, you can set the order
"Presence, name" in the address book, and that incidentally applies also to the
order in the contacts view of chat/call UI. Not very intuitive, but it's a way
to put your online contacts first.
