I don't agree with the privacy reason, you could let the user decide if
activate the screen on or not with a message notification but every symbian
nokia phone when a message arrives blinks up with "1 message received". There
isn't any privacy issue as when there is and incoming call and the name
appears.

Ten seconds with screen on  probably put battery down less than one or two
seconds of internet browsing.
